Travel agencies raided in Kolkata raided, three arrested
KOLKATA: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Eastern Railway, along with Kolkata Police, raided three travel agencies in the city and arrested three persons with tickets purchased in the names of bogus travelers. These agencies planned to sell the tickets at a premium to people during the forthcoming festive season. Investigators aren’t ruling out the possibility of a section of railway staff being involved in the racket.
The agencies where the raids were carried out are Dolphin Travel Agency, Trimurty Travel Agency and Azam Communications. During the raid at Dolphin Travel Agency on Sashi Bhusan Dey Street, 171 e-tickets, 307 cancelled tickets and four photocopies of journey-cum-reservation tickets were seized. The total value of seizure was nearly Rs 15,10,464. Tour manager Sanjoy Roy was arrested. During the raid at Trimurty Travel Aency in Burrabazar, 142 e-tickets valued at Rs 2,91,893 were seized. Prakash Panda, a resident of Gariahat, was arrested. At Azam Communications, 14 e-tickets valued at Rs 24,449 were seized and a person arrested.
“We detected the travel agencies after random calls made to the telephone numbers mentioned on reservation requisition slips. We immediately realized that things were wrong when the names didn’t match or the person at the other end denied having any knowledge of a train ticket being booked. The question that arises is how people can travel with tickets booked in the names of others? We suspect that a section of railway staff are involved,” an officer said.
