Crime graph on the decline: CM
Against the national trend of increasing incidents of crime, in Tamil Nadu, the occurrence of crime has come down over the past five years, according to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
In her reply to the discussion on demand for grants for the Home Department, she said that at the end of her 2001-06 rule, the number of murders reported in the State (as of 2005) was 1,366. This went up to 1,715 in 2010 just ahead of the end of the subsequent DMK regime, she alleged, and said the figure came down to 1,641 in 2015.
Similarly, murders for gain more than doubled from 74 in 2005 to 153 during 2010 and this also has come down to 107 cases in 2015. compared to 2010, cases of burglary had reduced by 2.97 per cent in 2015. Theft cases also went down by 23.23 per cent. Property-related crimes, including murders, were 23,068 in 2010. In 2015, the same stood at 19,931. This year, till June-end, 9,979 cases had been registered, she said.
At the national level, incidents of crime has increased due to various factors including growth, technological advancement and urbanisation.
On the contrary, it has come down in Tamil Nadu due to the punitive measures taken by the police. This was evident from the statistics presented to the House, Ms. Jayalalithaa said.
