Pul showed no sign of distress: Rijiju
Hours after the news of the former Arunachal Chief Minister, Kaliko Pul’s death hit the headlines on Tuesday, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, who represents Arunachal Pradesh in the Lok Sabha, told that Mr. Pul had not showed any signs of being disturbed.
Mr. Rijiju said that he had “failed to comprehend” the reason behind Mr. Pul taking the extreme step.
Mr. Rijiju, who is presently in Indonesia to attend the International meeting on Counter Terrorism, said that Mr. Pul had a “very strong inbuilt leadership character” and the political leader treated him as a friend and a political guide.
Being a Congress person, he had broken ranks with the party and allied with the BJP.
On being asked whether Mr. Pul showed any signs of distress, Mr. Rijiju said: “He never discussed anything like that with me. Despite being in different political party, he used to share his vision for Arunachal Pradesh.”
Mr. Pul, who took over as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh on February 19 this year, served briefly, with the Supreme Court in July reinstating Nabam Tuki, who then made way for Pema Khandu as the 10th Chief Minister of the State. Mr. Pul had led a group of dissident MLAs from Congress against the then Chief Minister Nabam Tuki early this year.
A senior Home Ministry official said that anticipating the violence in the state following Mr. Pul’s death, it had rushed around five companies of central forces to maintain law and order situation.
Mr. Rijiju also issued a press statement from Indonesia where he described Mr. Pul as one of the greatest ‘Son of the Soil.’
“An omnipresent figure in Arunachal politics, Pul was a great leader, respected by all classes of people, who worked with well-founded intentions for the development of Arunachal. He was an active social worker who strived for upliftment of weaker and backward sections of society and his death has caused an irreparable loss to Arunachal Pradesh,” Mr. Rijiju’s statement said.
