Donald Trump: Why can’t we use nukes?
WASHINGTON: Foreign policy traditionalists in America are going ballistic over Donald Trump ‘s purported remarks about possible use of nuclear weapons — which his campaign has subsequently denied — amid public concern over the Republican nominee’s mental stability and whether he can be entrusted with the stewardship of the world’s most potent military. The GOP itself is coming apart at the seams over Trump’s erratic public pronouncements and lack of coherence and clarity, with some party veterans going so far as to examine scenarios of what happens or what to do if Trump ditches the nomination for some reason.
Reports that Trump repeatedly asked a foreign policy adviser during a briefing why the US could not use its nuclear arsenal was first aired on an MSNBC TV show on Wednesday, adding weight to the growing chorus about the Republican nominee’s sense of responsibility. “If we have them, why can’t we use them?” Trump asked thrice, according to Joe Scarborough, host of the ‘Morning Joe’ show, who is himself a former Republican Congressman from Florida.
The Trump campaign denied the story, but it played into what critics see as Trump’s reckless and immature approach+ to world affairs that has seen him advocate that countries such as Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia obtain their own nuclear weapons instead of depending on US protection. He has also has refused to rule out using nuclear weapons in Europe or against extremists such as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, saying he does not want to take any cards off the table.
Araft of such unorthodox positions on war, trade, and immigration has led to traditionalists from President Obama down to Trump’s own party colleagues questioning his judgment. On Tuesday, Obama said Trump was “unfit to serve as President,” questioning his mental state, but others were more blunt, joining the view first aired by the Indian-American new age guru Deepak Chopra, who surmised in June that Trump was “emotionally and mentally retarded.”
Congresswoman Karen Bass’ petition, #DiagnoseTrump on Change-.org, calls Trump “dangerous for our country” and says she is concerned about his “impulsiveness and lack of control over his own emotions.” More than 10,000 supporters had signed the petition as of Thursday morning. But thousands also gathered to hear Trump speak in Jacksonville, Florida, as the candidate railed against the media and ranted haphazardly about issues without any coherent, specific details about how he plans to “Make America Great Again”.
