Athawale stresses on quota for Jats, Brahmins
On his first visit to Mumbai after assuming charge as Union Minister of State for Social Justice, Republican Party of India president Ramdas Athawale on Monday said he would be writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure reservation for Marathas, Jats and Brahmins as well.
To write to PM
“A number of demands have been raised for reservation from various corners of the country. I am sympathetic to all those demands. Marathas, Jats and economically weaker Brahmins too are demanding reservation in education, jobs and politics. I will write to Modiji in support of these demands and I am sure it will give positive results,” he told presspersons here. He said all those Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people who had converted to Buddhism must get all benefits prescribed under the law.
Mr. Athawale said the above reservation would be given without harming the present quota. The demand of Dhangars, seeking inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe quota, was considered by the government and a decision was expected soon.
Calling for strengthening the implementation of the SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Mr. Athawale criticised the authorities in Maharashtra for being too lenient in executing it.
“Ideally, a person charged under this Act should not get bail at least for two months. But Maharashtra has seen cases where the accused got bail. I will ensure that it does not happen anymore,” said Mr. Athawale.
