NR fails to pay Rs 13cr dues, LMC to seize bank account
LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Municipal Corporation will seize the bank account of the Northern Railway this week after latter’s failure to clear house tax dues worth Rs 13 crore. The dues have been pending since 2010.
LMC and NR were locked in a court case over the house tax dues. In 2010, the high court had ordered formation of a committee chaired by chairman of Railway Tribunal to resolve the matter. The committee told NR to pay 16% charges from 2010 onwards which have now aggregated to Rs 13 crore.
But so far NR has paid only Rs 9 lakh.
LMC recently sent a notice to NR asking why the dues were not cleared even after by the court’s directive, it received no reply. Section 509 of the Nagar Nigam Act, 1959, enables municipal corporations to take legal action against chronic tax defaulters, whether government or private.
Senior divisional commercial manager, NR, Lucknow, Ashwini Srivastava said, “We are aware of the tax dues. Communication is on with LMC. There was some dispute because of which dues could not be settled earlier.”
Besides NR, PWD, estate department, information department, Doordarshan, KGMU, Income Tax, NBRI etc., too are on LMC’s defaulters list.
LMC aims to collect Rs 231 crore this year in house tax, out of which more than 30% has to come from government departments.
PWD and estate departments recently paid Rs 92 lakh out of Rs 33 crore arrears. NBRI, Income Tax department, Artificial Limb Centre of Medical college have to pay around Rs 1.65 crore, 1.95 crore and 1.39 crore respectively to the corporation. Doordarshan has to pay Rs 1 crore as service charges.
The Central government buildings are liable to pay only the pre-fixed service charges to the corporation. In Central government premises, where LMC takes care of all civic facilities, it charges 75% of house tax as service charges. In those centers where partial facilities are taken care of, LMC takes 50% charges and those where no civic problem is addressed by the corporation, it takes 33% charges.
