Gulbarg case: 24 convicts to be sentenced today
The special trial court in the Gulbarg society massacre case will deliver its verdict on Friday on the quantum of sentence to 24 convicts, who were found guilty on June 2.
On June 13, the court announced that it would pronounce the sentence on June 17. Earlier, the trial court judge P.B. Desai concluded hearing on sentence by the prosecution agency SIT and lawyers representing victims as well as the convicts.
The prosecution has demanded exemplary punishment to the convicts, calling the carnage a case of mass murder in which 69 people belonging to the minority community, including a former parliamentarian, were burnt alive, on February 28, 2002 without any provocation.
The court delivered its verdict on June 2, more than 14 years after the massacre. The court found 11 persons guilty of murder while remaining 13 were convicted for charges such as arson and rioting and 36 accused were acquitted.
