Jayalalithaa closes 500 liquor shops, cuts liquor shop timings by two hours
CHENNAI: One of the first signatures of Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa after taking oath for the sixth time was the one to reduce the timing of liquor shops by two hours and to close 500 Tasmac shops in the state.
Jayalalithaa on Monday signed five welfare schemes as promised in the AIADMK manifesto.
Liquor shops across the state will be opened only between 12 noon and 10pm as against 10am and 10pm at present. All Tasmac shops in the state will work only for 10 hours instead of 12 hours.
The manifesto promised to impose liquor prohition step by step. Along with lowering the hours, 500 Tasmac shops will also be closed in the state. At present, there are 6,720 liquor shops in the state. Once 500 shops are closed, the number will come down to 6,220.
The chief minister signed an order to waive farm loans pending as of March 31, 2016. “All types of loans taken by small and medium farmers from banks, cooperative banks, loans taken on crops, short and long term loans will be waived. This will cost Rs 5,780 crore for the government’s exchequer,” said an official press release.
From now on, 100 units of power will be available free to all domestic consumers in the state. More than 78 lakh consumers will get first 100 units free. It will cost Rs 1,607 crore annually and the state government will pay the amount to Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company (Tangedco).
As of now, the government pays Rs 3,000 crore as subsidy for domestic consumers and it will go up to Rs 4,607 crore annually. When free power is given to farmers and powerlooms, the total subsidy will become Rs 6,500 crore. The state government has to pay this amount to Tangedco.
Powerloom weavers across Tamil Nadu will now on get 750 units free power instead of 200 units at present. The cost for Tangedco will be Rs 30 crore and the government has to pay as subsidy to Tangedco.
The chief minister also signed an order to increase the free gold scheme for the marriage of poor girls from 4gms to 8gms. As of now, 4gms of gold is given to poor girls during their marriage, along with Rs 50,000 to those who are not educated and Rs 25,000 for educated girls. The AIADMK manifesto promised to increase the gold grams from 4gms to 8gms.
