MRTPC steps into fashion fracas with FDCI
MUMBAI: What started off as a turf war between differing factions of the fashion world has now taken an unexpected turn with the Monopolies & Restrictive Trade Practices Commission (MRTPC) slapping Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) — which has leading designers like JJ Valaya, Rohit Bal, Krishna Mehta, Tarun Tahiliani — with a legal notice.
The notice issued under the MRTP Act 1969, asks FDCI why it placed restrictions on members keen on participating in non-FDCI events like Lakme Fashion Week.
Terming it an unfair practice, the letter issued by director general of Investigation and Registration, has given the FDCI 15 days to reply.
FDCI recently sent out email restricting designers from participating in non-FDCI events, three months prior to and after India Fashion Week.
It may be recalled that Lakme, once chief sponsor of India Fashion Week had parted ways with FDCI over the issue of sponsorship money a few months ago.
The Council had reportedly agreed to come around to Lakme’s terms but by then the Lakme had come up with its own fashion event.
