JNU student held after classmate alleges rape
A second year student of Jawaharlal Nehru University here has been arrested for allegedly raping a classmate in his hostel room on the campus six months ago.
The arrest was made on May 20 after the victim filed a complaint.
According to the police, the incident happened in December last.
The 23-year-old victim, who is herself a hosteller, had come to the room to attend a party with a group of fellow students.
Assaulted while intoxicated
At least eight people had attended the party. In her complaint, the victim said the girlfriend of the accused was among those who were there. She accused the duo of making her drink copious amounts of alcohol.
“After everyone left, the accused raped the girl who was in intoxicated state. The victim realised that she had been sexually assaulted only when she woke up the next morning,” a senior police officer said.
The victim approached the police on May 19 and narrated her ordeal. A case under Section 376 (rape) was registered against the accused at the Vasant Kunj (North) police station.
Victim in two minds
The girl told the police that she was initially in two minds about filing a complaint fearing the publicity the case would attract.
The accused student was produced before a Patiala House court, which sent him to 14 days’ judicial custody.
