PMK demands special investigation into Aavin milk adulteration scam
CHENNAI: The PMK on Sunday demanded the Tamil Nadu government form a special investigation team to conduct an inquiry into the Aavin milk adulteration scam. The party urged the government to amend the relevant Acts to punish adulterators with life imprisonment, as suggested by the Supreme Court recently.
An AIADMK functionary and a businessman from Tiruvallur were arrested by CB-CID officials on Friday for allegedly masterminding the Aavin milk adulteration racket exposed a month ago. Eight persons were arrested in connection with the case.
In a statement, PMK founder leader S Ramadoss said, “Inquiries revealed that one of the arrested persons is a close associate of expelled milk and dairy development minister V Moorthy. The government should have investigated the issue properly,” he said in the statement.
On August 19, the Vellimedupettai police in Villupuram district busted the racket by seizing a private tanker carrying milk from Tiruvannamalai to an Aavin facility in Chennai. About 1,800 litres of milk in the 12,000-litre tanker was adulterated. Eight persons were arrested in connection with the case. The arrest of former AIADMK south Chennai district functionary Vaidyanathan threw more light on the issue.
Ramadoss said that according to reports Vaidyanathan owned two transport companies and a total number of 104 tankers engaged in transporting milk from the Aavin facilities in several districts. “The scam happened in all 17 zones and 2000 litres of milk had been stolen from each tanker. More than 2 lakh litres of milk was stolen each day,” the PMK leader alleged.
He pointed out that Moorthy had been expelled from the ministry only after the scam came to light. “Vaidyanathan is very close to Moorthy and few other senior leaders. But there has been no explanation from the government over Moorthy’s expulsion. There was no inquiry with Moorthy,” he alleged.
Ramadoss also said Aavin was a trusted band in the state as pediatricians recommended it. People who indulged in Aavin milk adulteration should not be pardoned, he added.
