Auto driver arrested for misbehaving with women
The Cubbon Park police have arrested an autorickshaw driver on the charge of misbehaving with two women passengers after they refused to pay him double the meter fare on the busy Lavelle Road on Wednesday night. He also allegedly used racial slurs during his tirade against the women, who hail from the Northeast.
On Wednesday night, the women boarded an autorickshaw for Koramangala between 10.30 p.m. and 11 p.m. But the driver demanded that they pay double the fare.
The duo told him that they would pay Rs. 20 extra, but he refused and demanded double the meter fare, following which they got out of the vehicle and started to look for another auto.
Enraged, the driver, Suresh, hurled abuses at them and even made offensive gestures, said the police in their report. The women tried to ignore him, but Suresh continued to hurl abuses at them. In her statement to the police, one of the women said, “Initially he (the driver) was talking in Hindi, but all of a sudden he said that this is Bengaluru and that you cannot speak in Hindi. ‘Speak to me in Kannada,’ he said. I also retaliated and at that time he almost took his sandal off and tried to slap me. My friend stopped me and then he pointed a finger at me and started calling me names and said ‘you north-eastern you guys come to Bengaluru, go back to Delhi’.”
In their report, the women said that other autorickshaw drivers also joined in and supported Suresh. The police are looking into this allegation. In their report, the police noted that one of the women said, “It could have been worse if this happened in some isolated place and he could have even attacked and molested us.”
Sensing trouble and realising that the situation could escalate into mob frenzy, the women hastily dialled 100, the police control room. The police were quick to respond. They arrived at the spot and detained Suresh for questioning. The accused alleged that the passengers were drunk and were misbehaving with him.
The police registered a case against Suresh under Section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of IPC and seized his autorickshaw.
