First arrest in the Rs 5,500 crore NSEL scam, Amit Mukherjee nailed by EOW
Finally, the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police has made its first arrest in the Rs 5,500 crore NSEL payout scam.
NSEL’s former assistant vice president of business development – Amit Mukherjee has been arrested by EOW. Additional Commissioner of Police Rajvardhan Sinha confirmed to Headlines Today/Aajtak, saying, “Amit Mukherjee was the official who introduced defaulting companies (borrowers) to NSEL.”
In his affidavit, ex-managing director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NSEL Anjani Sinha had pointed towards Amit Mukherjee and a few other officials. Anjani Sinha had highlighted specifics, like how a defaulting company Mohan India Pvt Ltd allegedly gave Rs 18 lakh (dated 11 Feb and 22 March) to NSEL’s former assistant vice president of business development Amit Mukherjee and his wife Bonhi Mukherjee.
Sinha had also disclosed in his affidavit that Jai Shrivastava, a director of Mohan India, in a meeting in Delhi on September 7, had given Rs 35 crore to Amit Mukherjee, partly in cash and partly by cheque. In his affidavit, Sinha said, “I also came to know that in course of visits to Delhi, Amit Mukherjee was using high-end cars like Bentley, Porsche, etc, and would stay at the Hotel Radisson Blue (owned by Mohan India).”
Beside arresting Amit Mukherjee, the EOW officials were busy questioning directors of Mohan India (one of the defaulting company) – who played a major role in bribing Amit Mukherjee with cash.
Peons, security guards are directors in NSEL case, EOW confirms
The investigation by EOW has also revealed shocking details; peons and security guards are the directors of defaulting companies (borrowers). Additional Commissioner of Police and EOW chief Rajvardhan Sinha confirmed to Headlines Today/Aajtak that fake directors were used by borrowers in the scam.
Since last one week, around 15 directors have been questioned by EOW officials. While grilling these directors, EOW came to know that few of them are the staff members of these borrowers. Out of 24 defaulting companies, two companies were found using this modus operandi. These bogus directors were employed on a commission basis. As of now, EOW is investigating other companies as well, who might be using fake directors. More than 60 directors of defaulting companies and dozen of officials and promoters of NSEL and FTIL have been summoned by EOW for questioning.
Till now, Jignesh Shah and few others have been grilled by EOW officials. Jignesh Shah, the main accused in the NSEL case, was questioned for almost for four hours at the EOW office by Rajvardhan himself . Till now, EOW has found 9 defaulting companies using bogus addresses and out of 64 warehouses, half of them were empty.
