Cement scam: CBI raids 3 NHPC godowns
CHANDIGARH: Smelling a big scam in cement supply to Parbati hydroelectric state-III near Sainj river in Kullu district, a joint team of CBI officials from Shimla and Chandigarh raided 3 godowns of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and a construction company in Kullu and Chandigarh.
During the raid, record was also seized from these godowns on April 4 and senior NHPC officials were informed. The raids were conducted, following a tip-off about the tampering of record of cement bags loaded trucks. A senior vigilance officer of NHPC was also accompanying the CBI team when the godowns were raided.
CBI sources told TOI, “On April 1, two trucks loaded with cement bags were dispatched from the cement godown situated in Chandigarh for Parbati hydroelectric project in Kullu, but godown keepers entered the dispatch of 4 trucks in the register and when 2 trucks reached the godown at Kullu, the godown keepers there also registered entry of 4 trucks.”
The godown, from where trucks loaded with cement bags were dispatched, is located in Daria village near Chandigarh railway station and it belongs to a leading construction company, CBI sources added.
Meanwhile, a CBI team had followed the 2 trucks, which had reached Kullu on April 4, and caught the godown keepers red-handed while making the entries of 4 trucks. Apart from the record register, dispatch and arrival slips from these 3 godowns were also confiscated by the CBI officials.
SP (special crime branch), CBI, R Upask, said, “A detailed report of irregularities has been made and dispatched to NHPC authorities in Himachal.” He refused to disclose more about the raids but maintained that godown keepers have confessed their misdeeds before the raiding party.
The CBI officials said there is possibility that storekeepers were making wrong entries in the record of godowns for a long time and for establishing it, seized godown record is being scrutinized.
