DA: Teacher charged with sexual assault harasses victims
A former teacher charged with sexually assaulting five students at all-girls Cathedral High School has been harassing his victims and enlisting other students to help him, prosecutors charged yesterday.
Richard Ali of Queens has tried to thwart a police investigation into his after-school antics by calling his victims directly and “begging the girls not to say anything because it would get him in trouble,” said Assistant District Attorney Donna Marie Golia.
Golia said Ali is also “reaching out to other girls” at the Manhattan school “to do his bidding.”
The prosecutor told Supreme Court Justice James Griffin that Ali “knows he can’t reach out to” one teenage victim, who has an order of protection against him.
So the 27-year-old biology teacher calls former students to gossip about his torrid affair with the victim, then gets them to confront the girl in school, Golia added.
Ali, a Trinidad native, is charged with seducing the students between April 2005 and February 2007 in his Richmond Hill home, his car and a Whitestone movie theater, prosecutors said.
The baby-faced Casanova wore a scarlet shirt to court yesterday, where he was arraigned on a 25-count grand jury indictment, including charges of rape, criminal sexual acts, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. He faces seven years in prison if convicted.
Griffin increased Ali’s bail from $540,000 to $750,000 – which Ali was expected to post yesterday.
Ali’s lawyer Thomas McCullough dismissed the latest claims as “an uncharged crime.”
