New Delhi:A government-appointed panel consisting of four members will investigate the school bus accident that resulted in the deaths of six students and injuries to around 20 others in Mahendragarh, Haryana, on Thursday. The tragic incident occurred near Unhani village in Kanina, where a bus carrying approximately 40 students from primary to secondary classes to the GL Public School collided with a tree and overturned, according to police reports. An FIR has been filed regarding the incident.
The Haryana Education Department has scheduled a meeting on vehicle safety policy at 3 pm today. District Education Officers, Elementary Education Officers, and Block Education Officers from across the state will participate in the meeting via video conferencing.
Initial inquiries unveiled troubling aspects of the events that led to the crash. Among the debris after the accident, school bags, shoes, and study materials were strewn around. Some children were found lying in pools of blood, while others cried out in pain.
As per police reports, the driver, identified as Dharmender, was purportedly under the influence of alcohol and driving recklessly, leading to him losing control of the vehicle. Despite efforts by concerned villagers to intervene, the bus persisted on its route, eventually resulting in the accident.
Three individuals, including the school’s principal and another school official, have been apprehended in relation to the incident.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several other leaders, have conveyed their profound sadness and urged immediate actions to prevent similar catastrophic accidents in the future.
The incident has also prompted serious inquiries into the safety protocols of school transportation. Police report that the school bus lacked crucial documentation and had been previously fined for non-compliance.
