Leopard attacks five in Delhi’s Wazirabad; triggers panic
A leopard attacked at least five people in a village in North Delhi’s Wazirabad on Monday.
According to the officials, the leopard attack in the national capital triggered panic among locals. Delhi Fire Service Chief Atul Garg later informed that they had rescued the leopard.
A video of the leopard has gone viral on social media platforms. In the video, the leopard can be seen jumping from the terrace of a house in Jagatpur village early morning on Monday. The animal barged into the next building. There it was locked in a room, the officials said. There are videos of the leopard on social media, where some people are chasing the leopard and others are running in panic.
Delhi Fire Service stated that they received information about the incident at around 06:20 am IST and they immediately dispatched two fire tenders to the spot. “With the help of the locals, the officials locked the leopard in a room. The injured were sent to a hospital,” Delhi Fire Service (DFS) Chief Atul Garg said.
A local said that the leopard tried to attack several people and injured some. Another village resident added that the village is surrounded by a jungle and there is no fencing or other kind of security.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) MK Meena said that the officials received a call from Jagatpur village about a leopard entering a house. The local police reached the spot and the same information was given to the forest department. Three out of five injured people during the leopard attack have been identified as Mahender, Akash, and Rampal.
The DCP added that seven forest department personnel, a team from the Delhi Fire Department, and the local police are currently present at the spot.
Leopard sightings are rare in Delhi. In December 2023, a leopard was sighted at Sainik Farms in South Delhi. While the forest department suspected that the leopard had returned to Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, it was killed by a car on National Highway 44 near Khatushyam Temple in North Delhi’s Alipur.
