The US supports Arunachal Pradesh being acknowledged as part of India, even though China claims it.
China claims Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet and objects to Indian leaders visiting the state. Beijing also refers to the area as Zangnan.
The United States sees Arunachal Pradesh as part of India and opposes any efforts to make territorial claims across the Line of Actual Control. This statement comes after the Chinese military restated its claim over the state following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit there.
This week, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang stated that the southern part of Xizang (Tibet in Chinese) belongs to China and Beijing does not recognize the “so-called Arunachal Pradesh” established by India, firmly opposing it.
China often protests when Indian leaders visit the state to emphasize its own claims. Beijing also calls the area Zangnan.
On March 9, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, situated at 13,000 feet altitude. The tunnel will offer all-weather connectivity to Tawang, a strategically significant location, and is anticipated to improve troop movement along the frontier region.
At a press conference on Wednesday, State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel stated, “The United States recognizes Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory and opposes any unilateral efforts to make territorial claims through military or civilian actions across the Line of Actual Control.”
India has consistently dismissed China’s territorial claims over Arunachal Pradesh, stating that the state is an essential part of India. Additionally, New Delhi has rejected Beijing’s attempt to give “made-up” names to the area, asserting that it doesn’t change the truth.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated on Tuesday that it has observed the recent remarks made by the spokesperson of the Chinese Defense Ministry, which are seen as advancing unreasonable claims regarding the territory of Arunachal Pradesh. It emphasized that Arunachal Pradesh has always been, is, and will remain an integral and inseparable part of India.
