Army Establishes Elite Unit for Military Technology Development
The Army forms an elite unit to focus on developing critical technologies with military applications.
Officials stated that the Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG) has been tasked with fostering technologies across both wired and wireless systems.
Establishing STEAG is a component of the Army’s endeavors to cultivate technologies with a view to the future battlefield, according to sources.
“It will be a leading organization, unique in its kind, with the capacity to utilize specialized technology, utilize state-of-the-art solutions, and pinpoint appropriate instances for defense applications through collaboration with academia and industry,” one official remarked.
The specialized unit will concentrate on various critical technology fields such as electronic exchanges, mobile communications, software-defined radios, electronic warfare systems, 5G and 6G networks, quantum technologies, AI, machine learning, and more, he noted.
The advanced unit will conduct technical scouting, evaluation, development, and management of core ICT solutions, while also offering user interface support through maintenance and upgrading of contemporary technologies in the environment, the official added.
Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande has emphasized the necessity of acquiring new technologies for the force due to the evolving nature of warfare.
“In line with the principles of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Start-Up India, STEAG aims to narrow the gap between the armed forces, industry, and academia,” the official stated, requesting anonymity.
The establishment of the new Centre of Excellence is anticipated to significantly enhance self-sufficiency in advanced communication technologies, which have traditionally been dominated by a few countries with advanced economies and research capabilities, he mentioned.
The Army considers communications to be a vital element of military operations.
“In the rapidly advancing technologies for the battlefield, the faction equipped with superior communication technologies and the capability to link different components for sharing information will hold an advantage over its opponent,” remarked another official.
He emphasized that contemporary warfare demands the introduction of new equipment to ensure uninterrupted communication support for units and formations during operations.
He further stated that to assimilate these technological advancements, the Indian Army has established the pioneering technology-focused unit STEAG, which will enhance its capabilities in the digital realm.
