Sudha Murty’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha follows her receipt of the Padma Bhushan award for her contributions to social work the previous year.
New Delhi: Renowned author and philanthropist Sudha Murty has been appointed to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Ms. Murty, stating that her appointment to the Rajya Sabha on International Women’s Day is a strong symbol of the country’s ‘Nari Shakti’.
“I’m pleased to announce that @SmtSudhaMurty Ji has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India. Sudha Ji has made significant and inspiring contributions to various fields such as social work, philanthropy, and education. Her appointment to the Rajya Sabha is a strong testament to the power of ‘Nari Shakti’, showcasing the remarkable strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s future. I wish her a successful tenure in Parliament,” stated PM Modi.
The President of India appoints 12 members to the Upper House of Parliament in recognition of their contributions to arts, literature, sciences, and social services.
The husband of Ms. Murty, Narayana Murthy, is the founder of the IT giant Infosys, while her son-in-law is the UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. She was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for her social work last year and received the Padma Shri in 2006.
Renowned for her simplicity and openness, Ms. Murty embarked on her professional journey as an engineer at TELCO (now Tata Motors). Presently, she holds the position of chairperson at the Infosys Foundation. A prolific author in both English and Kannada, her literary works have been translated into all prominent Indian languages.
