Biden also confirmed that the United States will unveil significant new sanctions against Russia on Friday in light of Navalny’s passing.
On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden met with the wife and daughter of Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who passed away last week, “to offer his sincere condolences,” as stated by the White House.
At the gathering in California, Biden conveyed his respect for Navalny’s “exceptional bravery and his commitment to combating corruption and advocating for a Russia that is free and democratic, where the principles of justice are upheld impartially for all,” according to a statement from the White House.
Biden also confirmed that the United States will unveil significant new sanctions against Russia on Friday in reaction to Navalny’s passing, as well as Russia’s suppression and aggression, along with its conflict in Ukraine, according to the statement.
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan had previously stated that the most recent punitive actions will focus on various sectors, including the nation’s defense and industrial capabilities, as well as economic revenue sources.
Navalny, aged 47, became unconscious and passed away unexpectedly on Friday following a stroll at the “Polar Wolf” penal colony located above the Arctic Circle, where he was serving a thirty-year sentence, as stated by the prison service.
