The Indian High Commission in Canberra reported on Thursday that four Indians perished in a mass drowning event at an unpatrolled beach on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia.
In a social media post on X, the Indian High Commission expressed sorrow over a heartbreaking tragedy in Australia: four Indians lost their lives in a drowning incident at Phillip Island, Victoria. The Commission extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and assures that the @cgimelbourne team is providing all necessary assistance to the friends of the deceased.
At around 3:30 pm on January 24, emergency services were alerted to distress calls reporting four individuals in distress in the water. Upon arrival, rescue teams discovered three women and a man unresponsive after being retrieved from the water.
Despite immediate and intensive CPR efforts, police declared three of the individuals deceased at the scene.
Among the victims are a man and two women in their twenties, along with a woman in her forties, all belonging to an extended family group.
At the scene, the man and two women among the victims perished, while the third woman in her twenties was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in critical condition. Sadly, she later succumbed to her injuries.
As per local media reports, the 43-year-old woman who passed away from her injuries was vacationing in Australia, while the other three individuals resided in the country.
Australian media reports indicate that Forrest Caves Beach, renowned for its sea caves, is a popular tourist attraction. However, among locals, it has gained notoriety as a hazardous swimming location lacking lifeguard supervision.
Social media expressed apprehension regarding the safety of the area, with a local individual cautioning that heightened promotion of Phillip Island as a tourist hotspot might result in more incidents.
A resident of the area wrote on social media, expressing concerns that if Phillip Island continues to be heavily promoted as a tourist destination, there will be an increase in incidents.
