New outbreak of violence in Manipur as commando is killed in gunfight in Moreh
In Manipur news, the recent violence follows the arrest of two individuals, suspected of being involved in the killing of a police officer in Moreh, just two days ago.
Moreh, Manipur witnessed renewed violence on Wednesday morning when security forces clashed with suspected Kuki militants in the border town of Moreh, located in Tengnoupal district. Tragically, a police commando lost his life in the ensuing gunfight.
Reports indicate that the alleged Kuki militants launched bombs and gunfire at a security post near SBI Moreh. In response, the security forces engaged in retaliatory fire.
The deceased officer, W Somorjit, has been identified, while another commando sustained injuries.
Militants attacked the police near Ward 7, resulting in a gunfight lasting over an hour.
This incident follows the arrest, two days ago, of two individuals suspected of killing a police officer in Moreh.
Concerned about the “breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility, and grave danger to human lives and property” in the Tengnoupal district, the Manipur government has implemented a complete curfew. Law enforcement agencies and essential services are exempt from the curfew.
On Tuesday night, volunteers from the village engaged in a gunfire exchange with suspected Kuki militants at Koutruk village in Imphal West district. The firing was brought to a halt by central government forces.
Phillip Khongsai and Hemokholal Mate were apprehended by local police on Monday, accused of murdering SDPO Ch Anand in October of the previous year. The two individuals had opened fire on security personnel vehicles, prompting a pursuit and subsequent apprehension by the police.
They have been remanded to nine days of police custody. From their possession, authorities seized one pistol with two live rounds, one Chinese hand grenade, ten live rounds of AK ammunition, and ten detonators.
A considerable number of women gathered to protest outside the Moreh police station, demanding the “unconditional release” of the detainees.
Since May of the previous year, the ongoing violence between the dominant Meitei and Kuki communities has resulted in the loss of over 200 lives.
