Virat Kohli was captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the last time after the team lost to Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday and was eliminated from IPL 2021.
Kohli had previously revealed that IPL 2021 will be the last season in which he will captain the franchise.
RCB. And although he couldn’t get his hands on the silverware, which he craved so much, he led the team brilliantly.
Fans on social media, mostly RCB supporters, expressed their dismay at seeing Kohli as the team’s captain for the last time.
This season RCB was one of the most consistent teams, finishing the league stage in third place, behind second place Chennai Super Kings only in net run rate. Kohli’s team was just two points behind the leaders of the Delhi Capitals table and four points ahead of the fourth-ranked Kolkata Knight Riders.
On Monday, however, RCB was far from its best. After choosing to hit, RCB got off to a good start courtesy of Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal. But a devastating spell from Sunil Narine depicting the likes of Kohli, Srikar Bharat, Glenn Maxwell, and AB de Villiers dashed their hopes of setting a great goal. The middle and lower order just couldn’t get going and RCB eventually stuttered 138-for-seven in their allotted 20 overs.
Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer gave a KKR a solid start in the chase, but RCB made his way back into the game with some regular punches. Narine, however, was not content to wreak havoc with ball in hand. He came in and crushed Dan Christian for three sixes in an over to put KKR in the box.
RCB still refused to leave. Nitish Rana, Narine, and Dinesh Karthik fell in quick succession, giving Kohli and his team hope.
But captain Eoin Morgan and Shakib Al Hasan kept their nerve and got KKR to cross the line with just two balls to spare.
KKR will now face Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2 for a place in the final. Virat Kohli will shift his focus towards the upcoming T20 World Cup.
