Tremors Of Lakhimpur Violence Shake Politics In Far Punjab.
All the political parties in Punjab are trying to make sure that they are seen doing something to seek justice for the Sikh farmers killed in the UP Lakhimpur Kheri.
For many days, the dissent-ridden Punjab Congress has been waiting for an opportunity to show that all is well within the party.
The violence in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, appears to have given the party a check on all disgruntled leaders to re-engage.
On Thursday, the head of the Punjab Pradesh Congressional Committee (PPCC), Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has not yet officially retracted his resignation, and Prime Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who has not yet canceled key government appointments that they have enraged the head of the party’s state unit, they appeared together.
In Mohali, starting a march towards Lakhimpur Kheri to protest against the slaughter of farmers who were allegedly crushed by a car belonging to the son of a union minister. Sidhu and others later marched to UP and were detained at the border.
Although the epicenter of the current farmers’ anger appears to be a long way from Punjab, its ripples are felt here.
All the political parties in the state are trying to make sure they are seen doing something to seek justice for the murdered farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri.
The path to Punjab politics for Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for now appears to go through Lakhimpur Kheri.
Sidhu, who had submitted his resignation after opposing some appointments made by Prime Minister Channi, is now actively trying to galvanize the cadre.
Although initially Channi and Sidhu did not appear to be on the same page on the issue, they both submitted memoranda to the governor on the matter separately, now with the policy on violence reaching a fever pitch, they all appear to be working in concert.
Observers say that with four Sikh farmers killed in the tragedy, it was destined to become a big problem in Punjab and would further affect the fate of the BJP in the state where general elections are to be held early next year.
The SAD has also decided to send a delegation to Lakhimpur Kheri and AAP has already met with the victims’ families.
