I-T dept raids Lilavati Hospital
MUMBAI: The income tax (I-T) department on Monday searched 29 premises linked to Lilavati Hospital and its trustees. Raids were also carried out at the offices of Mayfair Realtors and Vestra Infrastructure, both of which had given loans to the hospital trust in 2002.
The trustees whose offices were searched are Prabodh Mehta, Rashmi Mehta, Chetan Mehta and Bhavin Mehta.
Director-general of income tax (investigation) B P Gaur said that the searches were carried out after the department received information about tax evasion. “We cannot disclose much now,” he said. Sources, however, said that the evasion was related to the import of hospital equipment. The searches were carried out at the hospital’s finance, pharmaceuticals and biomedical departments.
A statement by Niket Mehta, managing and permanent trustee of Lilavati Hospital, said that the I-T had carried out a search operation. “It is their routine work and we are cooperating with them,” he said. “The function of the hospital is unaffected and the patients are being taken care of by our doctors.”
Delhi resident Harsh Raghuvanshi had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking an investigation into alleged money-laundering by the hospital’s trustees. Lilavati Hospital in Bandra is governed by the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust which was formed in 1978. Seven of the 11 trustees are from the Mehta family.
Gaur denied that the searches were linked to the allegations of money-laundering.
