CBI raids I-T chief’s Mumbai home
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CBI on Friday raided the Mumbai residence of the chief commissioner of income tax in Kerala, Anil Goel, based on information that he is involved in the tax evasion bribery racket in the state.
It is learnt that unaccounted money to the tune of Rs 30 crore was seized from Goel’s residence in Mumbai following the raid. There were raids conducted at several spots in Thiruvananthapuram too, including the Income Tax office at Kowdiar and the residences of principal commissioner of I-T Sailendra Mamidi and I-T officer Sarath, who are in judicial custody now. There were unconfirmed reports that gold bars were seized from Sarath’s bank locker. CBI authorities, however, remained tight-lipped regarding the details of the raids.
On Wednesday, the CBI had caught five persons, including Mamidi and Sarath on charges of conspiracy and bribery to the tune of Rs 10 lakh. While arrests of the two officers were recorded, the three others were let go on Friday on strict direction of appearing before the investigating officers when they are wanted.
Meanwhile, in another related development, the Kazhakootam police have registered a case following the alleged suicide of a 38-year-old man, who was quizzed by the CBI in connection with the case. The deceased, Kumar, of Parakkode is alleged to be a benami of Sarath. He was grilled till 3pm on Thursday and he allegedly hanged himself after reaching home for lunch.
The police have recovered a suicide note in which he mentioned that Sarath, a close friend, had cheated him. All the money he made was from real estate business.
Kumar’s relatives too said that Sarath and Kumar maintained close friendship but they were unaware about their financial deals.
His body was released to the family by afternoon after conducting autopsy. The funeral was conducted by evening.
