Driver’s Identity to be Checked with Uber Selfie
Strengthening its stand towards ensuring security, Uber is all set to launch a “Real-time ID check” to make sure that the driver using the app matches the account that the ride-hailing app has in its records.
Periodically drivers will be asked to share a selfie with Uber before they log on to the app and Uber’s system will compare this photo with the one corresponding with the account in their files. If the images do not match, there will be temporary suspension of the account while the company will look into the matter further. Initially the feature will be rolled out in 5 Indian cities – Bengaluru, New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Hyderabad.
The new feature is expected to act as a trust builder for riders who sometimes complain that the driver is not the same person as the one shown in the app.
“Real ID Check” feature was rolled out by Uber last September in the United States. Uber at that time stated that, this feature prevents fraud and protect driver’s accounts from being compromised. It also protects riders by building another layer of accountability into the app to ensure that the right person is behind the wheel.
One such India first feature is the SOS function a.k.a. the ‘emergency’ button which lets riders directly connect with the police control room and an internal response team at Uber.
