Diesel and Petrol Prices Up in Tamil Nadu after VAT Revises
Diesel and petrol prices increased by Rs 3.78 and Rs 1.70 in Tamil Nadu after the VAT (Value Added Tax) were revised by the government on these products.
The move was protested by Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association stating that the hike would affect all sections of the society and demanded an immediate rollback.
K P Murali, Association President stated that VAT on petrol was increased to 34% from 27% whereas on diesel it was hiked to 25% from 21.4% last mid-night.
“This is a steep increase. While the petrol price will immediately affect the motorists, the hike in diesel rate will have a cycle affect on many products, including vegetables as diesel vehicles are predominantly used in the transportation of commodities” he added.
After the hike, petrol price touched Rs 75 mark in Chennai while additional costs such as transportation would add a little more to rates in different cities such as Cuddalore, Thanjavur and Tiruchirapalli, he said.
The move has been protested by many consumers including motorists.
