NTPC Coal Mining Starts after Years of Delay
The largest generation utility of India, NTPC on Thursday finally started with its coal mining dream. This will not only put on tracks efforts to secure fuel supplies but, transform NTPC into an integrated power company.
Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Raghubar Das along with finance minister Arun Jaitley flagged off the first rake carrying coal consignment produced by NTPC from its Pakri Barwadih mine. To begin with, coal from the block will go to NTPC’s Barh plant in Bihar.
NTPC is largely coal dependent as a thermal power generator. It consists of nineteen coal-fired power stations which in 2015-16 consumed 161 million tonnes of dry fuel. The absence of a captive coal mining unit turned out to be a weak link in the corporate architecture of the company.
The coal mining initiative took a long amount of time because of different reasons, starting from government cancelling block allotment and re-allotting the block to a new mine developer to squatters obstructing land acquisition.
NTPC is just making the beginning with Pakri Barwadih. It is expected to become India’s largest coal miner after Coal India Ltd. Once it brings to production all the blocks allotted to it.
