Protesters Burn Down Police Station, Police Use Force to Evict Jallikattu Supporters from Marina Beach Area
The Jallikattu protests which began peacefully over a week ago, turned violent on Monday morning. Protesters hurled stones at the police after they were forcefully evicted from different sites of protest including the Marina Beach.
It is also being reported that, protesters have burned down the ice house police station as well as set vehicles on fire. As per available information, the eviction process started early on Monday morning. Though initially it remained peaceful but suddenly started to go out of control and the police used tear gas and even lathi charged at the crowd. More than one hundred protesting students have been detained near Meenakshi Hall, Coimbatore. All roads leading to Marina Beach has been cordoned off by the police.
M K Stalin, DMK Working Chief has protested against the use of force by the police and called it ‘undemocratic’.
Jallikattu was banned by the Supreme Court in the year 2014 on grounds of animal cruelty.
