Trump Calls for Gaza Ceasefire as Controversial ‘Resort Plan’ Raises Eyebrows
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the resumption of assaults on Gaza after the January-agreed Israel-Hamas truce broke down in March.
According to The Jerusalem Post, which cited a US source familiar with the talks, US President Donald Trump has rekindled efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Securing the release of the other hostages captured during the October 7 terrorist incident is another goal of the reopened negotiations.
Following months of stalled talks and rising bloodshed, the story claims that the Trump administration is “optimistic” about reaching an agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the resumption of assaults on Gaza after the January-agreed Israel-Hamas truce broke down in March. The fresh offensive is said to have killed thousands of Palestinians, with many of the deaths taking place as civilians gathered to accept supplies.
“Seventy-five percent of issues have been resolved in recent weeks,” a source told The Jerusalem Post. “Key issues like the humanitarian situation, the end of the war itself, and the guarantees Israel is demanding to prevent Hamas from rearming are included in the remaining 25%,” the source stated.
The exile of Hamas officials from Gaza as part of a post-ceasefire agreement is one of the ideas being discussed. Despite Hamas’s prior rejection of the option, the article said it is currently being seriously discussed.
Trump, who came into office vowing to put a stop to the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, is having these discussions at a politically delicate moment. Rather, his government has come under fire for what many see to be overt backing for Israel’s military operations and for having presided over the start of actual hostilities with Iran.
Following the ejection of all Palestinians, Trump has unveiled a contentious proposal to seize control of Gaza and turn it into a “resort town.” Critics claim this would completely kill any possibility of a two-state solution and amounts to ethnic cleansing.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, claimed that the recent conflict with Iran had offered “opportunities” for the release of hostages held by Hamas militants in Gaza, where rescuers and witnesses said more than 30 people had been killed on Sunday.
Following Trump’s statement that he believed a truce could be signed within days, his remarks raised hopes for a new ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Palestinian territories.
In an effort to eradicate Hamas, the Islamist organisation that carried out the devastating October 2023 attack on Israel, Israel is bombarding Gaza.
Following his nation’s recent “victory” over Iran in their 12-day conflict, Netanyahu claimed that “many opportunities have opened up… first of all, to rescue the hostages.”
“Of course, we will also have to solve the Gaza issue, to defeat Hamas, but I estimate that we will achieve both goals,” he stated.
Netanyahu is under increasing internal and diplomatic pressure to bring a halt to the fighting in Gaza after the war between Israel and Iran concluded with a truce on June 24.
