Novo Nordisk Launches Wegovy in India: Price and Availability of the Weight Loss Breakthrough
Studies have shown weight loss in users by almost 10 to 15 per cent. Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company, introduced Wegovy, a popular medication for weight loss, as a once-weekly injectable in India on Tuesday. Eli Lilly’s injectable Mounjaro is now available in India, expanding the country’s selection of weight loss medications.
The substance, a prescription medication, will be advertised as a “skinny jab” and offered as an injectable. There will be four dosages in the delivery device. The cost of the 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, and 1 mg dosages will be Rs 17,345, or Rs 4,366 per week. According to the company, the 1.7 mg dose would cost Rs 24,280 per month, while the 2.4 mg dose will cost Rs 26,015.
What distinguishes Wegovy from Mounjaro and Ozempic?
The active ingredient in Wegovy, semaglutide, is a GLP 1A receptor agonist that mimics the actions of the hormone GLP-1, which is found naturally and helps control blood sugar, suppress hunger, and slow down stomach emptying. Wegovy can help you lose weight, but only if you weigh more than a specific amount. Semaglutide, commonly known as Ozempic, is increasingly frequently used to treat diabetes. Since they are the same medication and are administered in the same manner, the dose is the primary distinction between the two.
Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, functions similarly to the natural hormones GIP and GLP-1. It improves glucose regulation, aids in weight loss, and increases insulin production in response to meal intake. It is authorised for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and weight loss in those who are obese or overweight and have associated medical disorders.
What advantages does Wegovy offer?
It has been shown to offer advantages beyond weight loss. According to a recent study, the medication helps diabetics manage a frequent form of heart failure linked to obesity. People who are obese are more likely to develop heart failure because they have larger hearts and higher blood sugar levels. By delaying the passage of food from the stomach into the small intestine, Wegovy helps reduce appetite. As a result, you feel satisfied, eat less, and manage your fatty liver.
According to studies, it can also lower cholesterol and blood pressure and halt the advancement of chronic renal disease, reducing the risk of death from complications.
