Gautam Gambhir Departs from Indian Team, Returns Home from England — Here’s the Reason
A report stated that Gambhir was returning to India because of a family emergency on Friday, the day India was scheduled to play an intra-squad match for the series.
According to news agency ANI, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of Team India, is coming home from England because of a family issue. In order to track the performance of the junior squad (India A) against the England Lions in the two-match unofficial Test series, Gambhir flew to England ahead of the senior team. The news agency stated that Gambhir was returning to India because of a family issue on Friday, when India was scheduled to play an intra-squad match for the series. Gambhir had already flown home from Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to another such family issue.
“Due to a family emergency, Team India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, is returning to India from England,” sources told news agency ANI on Friday.
During the four-day intra-squad competition between India and India A, which starts on Friday, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate will lead the team in Gambhir’s absence.
Other members of the coaching team, such as batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and bowling coach Morne Morkel, will be available to assist Ten Doeschate. Before the England Test series begins on June 20, Gambhir is anticipated to return in a week and join the team.
The challenging conditions of England present India with a significant task in the forthcoming series. India lacked experience after batting masters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma said goodbye to Test cricket last month. The management looked to young people to usher in a new era after India lost its torchbearers.
Beginning at Leeds on June 20, the five-test tour of England will go until August 2025. The onus is on the Shubman-led redesigned team to show itself away from home in demanding and taxing English conditions, since India will be starting without its batting heavyweights Rohit and Virat after they retired from the game’s longest format.
The series will take place from June to August, with games planned at Old Trafford in Manchester, Lord’s and The Oval in London, Edgbaston in Birmingham, and Headingley in Leeds.
Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav are the members of India’s Test team for the England series.
England squad for first Test vs India: Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Ben Stokes (capt), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
