Air India Crash Survivor Vishwash Kumar Ramesh Recalls Chilling Moment: ‘I Thought It Was the End
Vishwash Kumar said that, in contrast to the rest of the plane, his portion of the aircraft stayed grounded and did not crash onto the building’s roof.
The sole survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, talked to the media for the first time a day after the horrific crash of an Air India flight in Ahmedabad that killed 241 people, describing the terrifying moments of his incredible survival. The sole first-hand report from aboard the fateful flight is the conversation.
The 40-year-old British national of Indian descent, who is receiving treatment at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, spoke with DD News on Friday morning. He was sat in row 11A, close to an emergency escape and a left-side window in the economy portion of the doomed airplane, when the crash happened.
The Ahmedabad plane crash’s lone survivor remembers his fortunate escape
Even I find it hard to believe I survived. I thought for a second that I would also die. However, I became aware that I was alive when I opened my eyes and glanced around. Vishwash Kumar recounted the events following the impact in the vicinity of Meghani Nagar, saying, “I still can’t believe how I survived.”
The plane crashed into buildings close to the airport 33 seconds after takeoff, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Authorities from Air India reported that among the passengers were 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.
He stated, “When the flight took off, within 5 to 10 seconds it felt like it was stuck in the air,” with a clearly frightened but lucid demeanour. The plane crashed into an existing institution as the lights abruptly began to flicker, first turning green and then white, Kumar recalled.
He said that, in contrast to the rest of the plane, Kumar’s portion of the aircraft stayed grounded and did not crash onto the building’s roof. “I believed I could leave when I saw the exit. I did, and I tried. Perhaps those on the opposite side of the aircraft couldn’t.
The British national said that the fire that started shortly after the collision burned his left hand. “I’m not sure how I made it through.” The air hostesses and two people I observed nearby both died in front of my eyes. He said, “I walked out of the rubble.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Kumar during his visit to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on Friday. “The Prime Minister enquired about my health and the events that transpired. I assured him that I was alright,” Kumar remarked.
