Steve Smith Surpasses Bradman and Sobers with Historic Milestone in WTC Final, Sets 141-Year Record
At the storied Lords Cricket Ground, Steve Smith set a new record for the most runs scored by a visitor hitter in Test matches.
On Day One of the World Test Championship (WTC) final versus South Africa at the storied Lord’s Cricket Ground, Australia’s top batsman, Steve Smith, set a new record for the most runs scored by a visiting batsman in Test cricket. Smith accomplished this enormous feat at the location known historically as the “Home of Cricket” by surpassing fellow Australian Warren Bardsley’s record of 575 runs in seven innings, at an average of 115, with his knock of 66 off 112 balls, laced with ten boundaries.
Don Bradman, a great batter who scored 551 runs in his eight innings at Lord’s, has also been overtaken by Smith. Gary Sobers, a legend from the West Indies, has 571. With a total of 591, Smith has become the first batter from outside of England to surpass the 590-mark at Lord’s in 141 years (taking into account the inaugural Test match between England and Australia in 1884).
Smith, 36, has already scored three fifties and two hundreds at the historic stadium prior to the 2025 WTC final. His greatest individual score of 215 came in 2015 during the second Ashes Test match against England.
Additionally, Smith’s performance assisted Australia in rallying from a lunchtime deficit of 67/4 following devastating two-wicket hauls from South African seamers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen. After reviving Australia’s innings with a crucial 79-run partnership for the fifth wicket with all-rounder Beau Webster, Smith was caught at slip by part-time off-spinner Aiden Markram.
Smith has now amassed four hundreds and a fifty in his previous six Test matches for Australia after his knock of 66. Smith became the first and only batter to record multiple fifty-plus scores in the WTC finals thanks to his crucial knock.
Smith now holds the record for the most fifty runs scored by a batter who is not English in Test matches played on English soil. After surpassing renowned batsman Allan Border and Viv Richards, who each scored 17 fifty-plus Test scores in England, Smith now has eighteen fifty-plus scores in Test matches.
By defeating India in the final, Australia hopes to keep the World Test Championship trophy they won two years ago.
