Mitchell Starc Surpasses Mohammed Shami’s Record for Most Wickets in World Tournament History
Mitchell Starc has taken 11 wickets in Australia’s five ICC finals thus far, one higher than Shami’s total of 10 in four ICC finals.
In the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final, Mitchell Starc is spearheading Australia’s bowling attack against South Africa. The left-arm bowler took two wickets for the Baggy Greens on the opening day of the game at Lord’s in London. On the final delivery of the first over of South Africa’s first innings, he dismissed Aiden Markram for a six-ball duck to start his account. He immediately got rid of Ryan Rickelton. After hitting three fours and scoring 16 runs off 23 balls, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter was caught in the slip by Usman Khawaja.
Starc became the leading wicket-taker in the ICC finals after taking Rickelton’s wicket on Wednesday, June 11, bringing his total number of wickets in the tournament to 11. To date, Starc has represented Australia in two WTC Finals, one T20 World Cup, and two ODI World Cups.
In the 2015 ODI World Cup final against New Zealand, he concluded with stats of 2/20. In the 2023 ODI World Cup final against India, he took three wickets for 55 runs at Narendra Modi Stadium. Starc gave up 60 runs in his allotted four overs and failed to claim any wickets in the 2021 T20 World Cup final between Australia and New Zealand in Dubai.
The left-arm bowler from New South Wales took two wickets in each of the two innings against India in the 2023 WTC final.
Shami has taken 10 wickets while playing for India in two WTC finals, one ODI World Cup, and one Champions Trophy final. In the 2023 and 2025 ODI World Cup and CT finals, he removed eight batsmen in the WTC finals and one batter apiece.
