Experts Say COVID Infections Becoming Milder, No Major Cause for Alarm
As of June 6, there were 5,300 active cases nationwide, with around 500 more cases added in the last day.
Scientists assure that there is no reason for fear, stating that although COVID is becoming milder over time, an occasional spike in cases is anticipated because the virus that causes it is now endemic and continuously changing.
In response to concerns about the disease’s increasing prevalence across the nation, the experts pointed out that it seems to be caused by a combination of seasonal variables including weather extremes, which keep us indoors, and declining immunity. Additionally, they emphasised the importance of exercising caution, especially when dealing with vulnerable populations.
The severity of COVID-19 infections is decreasing with each year. It is less harmful than the flu and is now just another respiratory ailment. We can disregard COVID-19 as an exceptional instance. Dr. Chandrakant Lahariya, a global health expert, told PTI that it is not reason for alarm.
“The subvariants are all similar in that they are highly contagious but have reduced virulence. Anurag Agarwal, dean of biosciences and health research at Ashoka University in Haryana’s Trivedi School of Biosciences, adding, “The vast majority of people do not get severe disease, even though highly susceptible people can still get it, especially those who have had previous infections or vaccines.”
Two years ago, in May 2023, the World Health Organisation deemed the end of COVID-19 a “public health emergency.” The illness is described by medical professionals as “seasonal,” “endemic,” “here to stay,” or “restricted to a certain region.”
As of June 6, there were 5,300 active cases nationwide, with around 500 more cases added in the last day. More than 4,700 of these have recovered. According to the Union Health ministry, the latest surge, which began in January of this year, has claimed 55 lives, mostly among people who already had pre-existing conditions.
