Report: Rahul Gandhi Opposes Family Member Contesting from Amethi & Raebareli in 2024 Election
The two seats in Uttar Pradesh – Raebareli and Amethi – will vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on May 20. The last day for filing nominations is May 3 and the Congress has not yet announced its candidates for the two seats.
Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader and Member of Parliament from Wayanad, doesn’t want anyone from his family, including himself, to run for elections from Amethi or Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh. He had initially agreed to contest from Raebareli but has now decided not to do so.
The Amethi and Raebareli seats will have elections on May 20 as part of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The Congress hasn’t named its candidates yet. The deadline for filing nominations for these seats is May 3. Rahul Gandhi has planned a rally in Pune on that day.
The leaders of Congress, including Mallikarjun Kharge, are trying hard to persuade either Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, or maybe one of them, to contest from the two seats where the party usually does well.
On May 1, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh mentioned that the candidates for the two seats would be revealed within a day. He also stated that the party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) has given Mallikarjun Kharge the authority to make the final decision.
There are reports saying Rahul Gandhi might run for the Raebareli seat, while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra might decide not to run for elections. Instead, Priyanka will concentrate on campaigning for the party all over the country, as per a report in India Today.
According to a report in The Indian Express, many in the Congress party think that if no one from the Nehru-Gandhi family participates in the Uttar Pradesh elections, it would give out a bad political message.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, Rahul Gandhi contested from Wayanad, a seat he won comfortably in 2019. Wayanad voted in the second phase of elections on April 26.
Some leaders in the Congress think that if Rahul wins both Wayanad and Amethi, he might have to give up one of the seats, which could upset the voters.
The Congress had been winning the Amethi and Raebareli seats since 1999 until the 2019 elections when Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi to Union Minister Smriti Irani. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Irani again from Amethi. Sonia Gandhi, who usually wins the Raebareli seat, has decided not to contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress party is teaming up with the Samajwadi Party to contest elections for the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha seats. Out of the 80 seats in UP, the Congress has been allocated 17 seats, while the rest have been divided among the Samajwadi Party and other allies of the Indian bloc.
The final phase of the Lok Sabha Elections is scheduled for June 1, and the results will be announced on June 4.
