Amazon Executive Dispels Myth: AI are a Huge Help, Not Job Stealers
An Amazon executive says that the idea of robots stealing human jobs is a “myth.” He added the robots can instead be helpful for humans.
Discussions about the possibility of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or robots taking over human jobs began when OpenAI launched its AI tool, ChatGPT, in 2022. The generative AI chatbot took the world by storm and people were soon talking about all the exciting possibilities that future had in store. However, there was also a section of people who were concerned about their jobs and wondered if AI will be the reason they lose their means of livelihood one day. Over the last year, several tech experts have commented on the debate and while some believe that humans will be replaced by AI, others believe that the emerging technology will pave way for us to work in a better manner. And an Amazon executive agrees with the latter school of thought.
According to a report in CNBC, Stefano La Rovere, a top level executive at Amazon, says that the idea that robots and emerging tech will steal jobs is all wrong. Instead of taking jobs away, he says these technologies are actually helping people do their jobs better.
La Rovere, who heads up the global robotics, mechatronics, and eco-friendly packaging department at Amazon, told CNBC that advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, and other high-tech tools are improving how people work. He even says these tools are making entirely new types of jobs possible.
“It is a myth that technology and robots take out jobs,” La Rovere told CNBC’s “Street Signs Europe” recently.
“Robots and technology help our employees by reducing walking distance between assignments, by taking away repetitive motions, or [by] helping them to lift heavy weights,” La Rovere added.
He also highlighted how employees can upskill and focus on learning new competencies and abilities since robots are taking care of basic tasks. La Rovere also pointed out that, thanks to the emerging technology, Amazon has created more than 700 new types of jobs in recent years.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has also been rooting for AI for quite some time. In a recent letter to shareholders, the tech giant’s CEO said that AI could possibly be the largest technological advancement since the internet. Jassy wrote in the letter, “Generative AI may be the largest technology transformation since the cloud (which itself, is still in the early stages), and perhaps since the Internet. Unlike the mass modernisation of on-premises infrastructure to the cloud, where there’s work required to migrate, this GenAI revolution will be built from the start on top of the cloud. The amount of societal and business benefit from the solutions that will be possible will astound us all.”
