Congress’ Shashi Tharoor was asked about who could replace PM Modi. Here’s what he said.
Shashi Tharoor, a three-time Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, is preparing for his fourth Lok Sabha election campaign from the same constituency.
In New Delhi, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed that in the parliamentary system, the query of who could substitute Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “inconsequential” since we elect not an individual but a party or a coalition of parties.
Speaking to X earlier today, Mr. Tharoor mentioned that a journalist had posed this question to him. “Once again, a journalist has inquired about identifying an individual who could be an alternative to Mr. Modi. However, in the Parliamentary system, this question holds no relevance. We are not selecting an individual (as in a presidential system), but a party or coalition of parties that embody a set of principles and beliefs crucial for preserving India’s diversity, pluralism, and inclusive development,” he wrote.
“The substitute for Mr. Modi comprises a collective of seasoned, capable, and diverse Indian leaders who prioritize addressing people’s issues rather than being guided by personal ego,” added the Congress leader.
He stated that the selection of the Prime Minister was a “secondary consideration.” “The specific individual chosen for the role of Prime Minister is of secondary importance. Safeguarding our democracy and diversity takes precedence,” remarked Mr. Tharoor.
Having served as a Member of Parliament for three terms representing Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Mr. Tharoor is now preparing for his fourth Lok Sabha election campaign from the same constituency. He faces competition from BJP leader and Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, as well as Left front candidate Pannyan Ravindran.
In the last few weeks, Mr. Tharoor has been actively campaigning in his constituency ahead of the upcoming election. Thiruvananthapuram is scheduled to vote in the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls on April 26.
