Hezbollah Launches ‘Revenge’ Strike Over Lebanon ‘Massacre’, After Israel Attacks Egypt-linked Group
U.S. President Joe Biden said Hamas attacked Israel in part to stop a historic agreement with Saudi Arabia
Israel on March 27 claimed that it had eliminated a “significant terror operative” of a group allied to Hezbollah in Lebanon. The group, Al Jama’a Al Islamiyya has roots in Egypt, and has claimed to have launched attacks on Israel from Lebanese territory along with Hezbollah since the latest Gaza war began. The border crossing between Egypt and Gaza opened on Saturday to let desperately needed aid flow to Palestinians running short of food, medicine and water in the territory that is under an Israeli siege.
More than 200 trucks carrying roughly 3,000 tons of aid had been positioned near the crossing for days before heading into Gaza.
Meanwhile, Egypt is hosting dozens of regional leaders and senior Western officials for a summit on the war between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in Gaza. The meeting on Saturday will discuss ways to de-escalate the fighting and seek a cease-fire amid mounting concerns about a regional conflict.
Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden said Friday he thought Hamas was motivated to attack Israel in part by a desire to stop them from normalising relations with Saudi Arabia.
The October 7 attack coincided with a major Jewish holiday. It led to retaliatory airstrikes by Israel that have left the world on edge with the U.S. trying to keep the war from widening, as 1,400 Israelis and 4,137 Palestinians have been killed. Hamas also captured more than 200 people as hostages after the initial assault.
On Friday, Hamas freed an American woman and her teenage daughter who had been held hostage in Gaza, Israel said, the first such release from among the roughly 200 people the militant group abducted from Israel during its rampage.
