IIT Madras Graduate Pavan Davuluri Appointed as Head of Microsoft Windows
With more than 23 years of experience at Microsoft, Mr. Davuluri played a pivotal role in collaborating with Qualcomm and AMD to develop processors for Surface.
Pavan Davuluri, a graduate of IIT Madras, has been named the new leader of Microsoft Windows and Surface. He joins the ranks of prominent Indian leaders in Big Tech companies, such as Sundar Pichai of Google and Satya Nadella of Microsoft.
Mr. Davuluri assumes the role previously held by longtime product chief Panos Panay, who departed the department to join Amazon last year. Previously, Mr. Davuluri supervised the Surface group while Mikhail Parakhin led the Windows department. Following the departures of Mr. Parakhin and Mr. Panay, he has taken on leadership responsibilities for both the Windows and Surface departments.
An internal memo obtained by The Verge from Rajesh Jha, Microsoft’s head of experiences and devices, detailed the updated organizational structure. He stated that this decision would enable the organization to adopt a “comprehensive approach” to develop its devices and experiences in the “AI era”.
“As part of this transition, we are merging the Windows Experiences and Windows + Devices teams to form an integral part of the Experiences + Devices (E+D) division. This will allow us to adopt a comprehensive approach to developing silicon, systems, experiences, and devices that encompass both Windows client and cloud services in this era of AI. Pavan Davuluri will lead this team and will remain under my direct supervision. Shilpa Ranganathan, Jeff Johnson, and their respective teams will report directly to Pavan. The Windows team will continue its close collaboration with the Microsoft AI team on AI, silicon, and experiences,” he stated.
Mr. Davuluri has accumulated over 23 years of experience at Microsoft, contributing to collaborations with Qualcomm and AMD to develop processors for Surface devices.
“We are enthusiastic about this team’s role in assisting Microsoft AI in realizing its ambitious goal of creating top-notch consumer AI products. I eagerly anticipate collaborating closely with Mustafa and the team as we integrate our AI products, such as Copilot, across our Experiences + Devices (E+D) portfolio,” stated the memo.
The restructuring announcement follows shortly after Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind and former CEO of Inflection AI, joined Microsoft as the CEO of its newly formed AI division.
