At a Turning Point: Scaling AI for Production
During the Mint AI for Business Summit, Sandip Patel, Managing Director for India/South Asia at IBM, referenced an AI adoption report indicating that India and Indian enterprises are consistently surpassing their global counterparts in the exploration and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI). In his opening remarks, Patel highlighted that AI technology is reaching a crucial juncture, evolving from merely supporting businesses to becoming an essential foundational technology.
“In line with findings from the AI adoption report, approximately 59% of IT professionals within large organizations have confirmed active deployment of AI. Additionally, six out of ten IT professionals state that their companies are actively rolling out generative AI solutions, with approximately 34% of others currently exploring such solutions in various capacities,” Patel elaborated.
Highlighting the issue of why proofs of concept (PoCs) in AI struggle to scale, Patel noted that despite AI deployment, only 54% of pilots and PoCs successfully transition to production. He then identified four critical areas—customer experience, horizontal functions, IT processes, and core business operations—that require focus to scale AI to production while tackling challenges like bias, data quality, and security.
He also addressed IBM’s involvement and commitments in AI, highlighting the Watson.AI platform and its various components tailored for developing AI applications, managing data, ensuring governance, orchestrating processes, and automating IT tasks.
