All-Indian Crew Aboard Cargo Ship That Collided with Bridge in Baltimore, U.S
The vessel is owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd, and the ship was traveling from Baltimore to Colombo.
The company stated that all 22 crew members aboard the cargo ship, which collided with a significant bridge in Baltimore on the early morning of March 26, are Indian nationals.
At around 1:30 am local time, the container ship named “Dali,” flying the flag of Singapore, collided with a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.
As per the vessel details provided by the Synergy Marine Group, all 22 crew members were of Indian nationality.
The governor of Maryland stated that the operators of a cargo ship experienced a power loss and made a mayday call just before colliding with a bridge in Baltimore. This allowed authorities to restrict vehicle traffic on the bridge.
The collision of the container ship with the major bridge resulted in the bridge snapping and falling into the river below. Multiple vehicles plunged into the cold waters, prompting rescuers to search for survivors.
The reason behind the cargo ship’s collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge before the busy morning commute remained unclear. An official referred to it as a “developing mass casualty event” occurring in a major American city just outside of Washington.
The “Dali” has a capacity of 10,000 TEU and onboard Units: of 4,679 TEU.
The vessel is owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd, and it was sailing outbound from Baltimore to Colombo.
The owners and managers of the Singapore-flagged container ship “DALI” have reported that the vessel collided with one of the pillars of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. This occurred while the ship was under the guidance of two pilots on board, at around 01:30 local time on March 26, according to a statement from the ship management company Synergy Marine Group.
The statement mentioned, “All crew members, including the two pilots, have been found and there are no reports of injuries. There has been no pollution reported.” Although the exact cause of the incident is still unknown, the “DALI” has activated its Qualified Individual Incident Response service.
The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities have been informed, and the owners and managers are cooperating fully with federal and state government agencies according to an approved plan.
“In Baltimore, we are deeply saddened by the events and extend our sympathies to all those impacted,” stated Maersk in a released statement.
The statement confirmed that the container vessel “DALI,” operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group, is under a time charter agreement with Maersk and is transporting cargo belonging to Maersk customers. There were no Maersk crew or personnel on board the vessel.
“We are monitoring the investigations carried out by authorities and Synergy closely, and we will make every effort to keep our customers updated,” the statement added.
The cause of the cargo ship colliding with the bridge in the major American city near Washington remained unclear.
It was also not clear how many people might be in the water.
