“Who authorized this?” Vladimir Putin accuses Ukraine and “radical Islamists” for the Moscow terror attack.
The Moscow concert attack resulted in 139 fatalities and 182 injuries when four individuals forcibly entered Crocus City Hall on Friday night and discharged firearms.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, asserted on Monday that the Moscow terror attack was perpetrated by “radical Islamists.” However, he opted not to explicitly mention ISIS, the terrorist organization claiming responsibility for the heinous attack. During a national address on Telegram, the Russian leader hinted that Ukraine might have been involved in the attack to “demonstrate to their own population that not all hope is lost for the Kyiv regime.”
In Moscow, during a concert at Crocus City Hall on Friday night, four men forced their way in and opened fire, resulting in 139 fatalities and 182 injuries. The Russian authorities have detained four individuals of Tajik origin and have charged them with terrorism.
Vladimir Putin stated that the attack was carried out by radical Islamists.
“We are aware that the act was perpetrated by radical Islamists, adherents to an ideology that has been battled by the Muslim world for centuries,” he stated.
He asserted that the assailants were apprehended while attempting to flee to Ukraine. Putin then raised the question: “Who stands to gain from this?”
Putin suggested that the attack might have been associated with the “neo-Nazi Kyiv regime.”
“This heinous act could be one of many attempts by those who have been in conflict with our nation since 2014, perpetrated by the neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv,” stated Putin.
“We are aware of who carried out the crime against Russia and its people. However, our concern lies in determining who gave the orders,” he added.
Putin said the attackers wanted to sow panic. But as Russian forces were advancing through the Ukraine war theatre, he said, it could also be intended to “show their own population that not all is lost for the Kyiv regime”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky refuted allegations that his country was responsible for the attack. He remarked that according to Putin, “everyone is a terrorist except himself, despite his two-decade history of thriving on terror.”
“When he is no longer in power, the necessity for terror and violence will vanish,” Zelensky stated.
Since February 2022, when Putin commanded Russian forces to invade Ukraine, the two nations have been engaged in a prolonged conflict.
The United States stated that Putin is aware that ISIS carried out the attack.
The White House press secretary stated, “ISIS bears the sole responsibility for the terrorist attack in Moscow.” Additionally, there is no evidence implicating the government of Ukraine in the incident. The United States shares its condolences with those affected by this tragic event and strongly condemns such acts of terror. In early March, the U.S. government informed Russia about a planned terror attack in Moscow, emphasizing ISIS’s culpability.
French President Emmanuel Macron informed reporters that the available information suggests that the Islamic State was responsible for instigating this attack.
“This group also attempted various actions within our own borders,” he remarked during a visit to French Guiana.
