Deadly Heat Wave Claims at Least 34 Lives in U.P.’s Ballia
The most populous state in India is experiencing temperatures ranging from 42 to 47 degrees Celsius, exacerbated by power outages, which are adding to the suffering of the residents.
In the last 48 hours, at least 34 individuals have succumbed to health issues triggered by an intense heatwave in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district. The majority of those who passed away were over the age of 60.
During an interview with local media, Ballia’s Chief Medical Officer Jayant Kumar revealed that due to the exceptionally high temperatures, individuals were being admitted to the District Government Hospital for treatment. On June 15, 23 deaths were reported, followed by 11 deaths on June 16. Dr. Kumar noted that the majority of those admitted were experiencing various complications.
The entire state of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous, is grappling with a heatwave, with temperatures soaring between 42 and 47 degrees Celsius. Persistent power outages have compounded the hardships faced by residents, prompting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to summon State Energy Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma, Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) Chairperson M. Devraj, and other UPPCL officials to his residence late in the evening on June 16. During the meeting, the Chief Minister expressed his dissatisfaction with the unannounced power cuts and directed them to establish feeder-wise accountability.
