AAP has called for a ‘gherao’ of PM Modi’s residence in protest of Kejriwal’s arrest; Delhi Police intensifies security measures.
On March 21, Kejriwal was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding a money-laundering investigation related to the previously abolished excise policy.
An official confirmed on March 26 that security has been bolstered at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence by the Delhi Police, in response to the AAP’s rallying cry for a “gherao” protest against the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Security has been increased in various other areas of the national capital by the police.
According to a Delhi Traffic Police officer, movement in portions of New Delhi and Central Delhi is expected to experience disruptions because of the protest.
“The Delhi Police officer stated that comprehensive security measures have been implemented, including multiple layers of security, to uphold law and order in the vicinity,”
“He added that Section 144 of the CrPC has already been enforced in the vicinity of the Prime Minister’s residence, prohibiting any protests.”
Earlier, Delhi Minister Gopal Rai had declared intentions to encircle the Prime Minister’s residence on Tuesday as a form of protest against Mr. Kejriwal’s arrest.
Mr. Rai had additionally mentioned that “large-scale protests” would take place across the country.
On March 21, Mr. Kejriwal was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding a money-laundering case associated with the previously abolished excise policy. He remains in the custody of the agency until Thursday.
The central agency has alleged that the AAP national convenor is involved in soliciting kickbacks from liquor traders in exchange for favors.
The ED has additionally alleged that Mr. Kejriwal is the “central figure and principal conspirator” in the abolished policy, collaborating with AAP leaders, ministers, and other individuals.
Mr. Kejriwal has denied the allegations and accused the BJP-led Centre of “manipulating investigative agencies for political ends”.
In the meantime, the Delhi Traffic Police has set up seven diversion points to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic during the protest.
“Due to the protest, commuters are advised to steer clear of Kemal Ataturk Marg, Safdarjung Road, Akbar Road, and Teen Murti Marg on Tuesday,” stated an officer.
