The DMK has unveiled its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls, focusing on pledges regarding the governor’s role.
The manifesto commits to amending Article 361 of the Constitution, which currently provides immunity to governors from facing criminal proceedings.
The DMK, in its manifesto released ahead of the April-May Lok Sabha polls, pledges to strive for the appointment of governors in consultation with state governments and chief ministers, until the office of governor is abolished.
The manifesto pledges to amend Article 361 of the Constitution, which provides immunity to governors from criminal proceedings, and also vows to revoke the National Education Policy, 2020, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), and the “One Nation, One Election” proposal.
The promises about the governor’s role come as the DMK government has had many disagreements with Governor RN Ravi. The DMK claims Ravi is working for the BJP and its ideological source, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
The state government accused Ravi of trying to act like a separate government. They went to the Supreme Court because Ravi refused to swear in K Ponmudi as a minister, even though the court had “suspended” Ponmudi’s conviction in a case about having too many assets.
The DMK, a member of the Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), has pledged several promises. These include granting statehood to Puducherry, exempting Tamil Nadu residents from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), providing Indian citizenship to Sri Lankan Tamils, establishing a Supreme Court bench in Chennai, removing toll plazas on National Highways, ensuring Minimum Support Price for farmers, offering educational loan waivers, and selling LPG cylinders at ₹500, petrol at ₹75, and diesel at ₹65.
Lawmaker Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, leading the DMK’s election manifesto committee, traveled extensively across Tamil Nadu to craft it. DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin unveiled the manifesto alongside the Lok Sabha elections candidate list.
The INDIA bloc finalized its seat-sharing arrangement in Tamil Nadu on Monday. According to this agreement, the DMK will vie for 21 out of the state’s 39 seats, while the Congress party will compete for nine seats in Tamil Nadu and one seat in Puducherry. Furthermore, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), a Dalit party in the state, along with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India, have each been allotted two seats.
The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) are each competing for one seat. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the DMK-led alliance dominated the polls in the state, securing victory in 38 out of the 39 seats.
The BJP has been attempting to gain ground in Tamil Nadu, despite the fact that no national party has been successful in establishing a significant presence in the southern state since 1967.
