PM Modi Congratulates President Putin on Election Victory, Anticipates Collaboration
Russian President Vladimir Putin secured victory in the election with a significant majority, although the outcome was widely expected.
In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to President Vladimir Putin on his success in Russia’s presidential election, expressing eagerness to enhance the special relationship between the two nations.
Putin secured victory in the election with an overwhelming majority, as the outcome was widely anticipated. According to Russia’s Central Election Commission on Monday, he received 87.3% of the votes, marking a record turnout of 77.5%.
“In a post on X, warm congratulations were extended to H.E. Mr. Vladimir Putin on his re-election as the President of the Russian Federation,” Modi stated.
“Anticipating collaboration to enhance the longstanding Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia in the future,” he further remarked.
Putin’s closest competitor, Nikolay Kharitonov of the Communist Party, garnered just 4.3% of the votes tallied.
The electoral triumph will solidify Putin’s control over Russia, where he has been in power since the beginning of the century. It is anticipated that he will continue to hold office until at least 2030, positioning him as Russia’s longest-serving leader since Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.
Addressing his election headquarters on Sunday, Putin remarked that the elections have “strengthened” national unity and emphasized that Russia has “numerous tasks ahead.”
Putin stated, “Regardless of efforts to intimidate or suppress us, no one has succeeded in doing so in history, and it will not happen now or in the future.”
Russia remains a significant provider of defense equipment to India, although India has expanded its sources of such equipment by finalizing major agreements with the US, France, and Israel in recent years. Moreover, Moscow has become one of the top suppliers of energy, with India capitalizing on discounted Russian crude following sanctions imposed by Western countries after the Ukraine invasion in 2022.
